The island covers 37 square miles of mountainous terrain, spread across two nations, with beaches, restaurants, and villages that no resort shuttle will ever take you to. A rental car is not a luxury here. It is the difference between a good holiday and a great one.
Sint Maarten has a logical road structure that makes getting lost essentially harmless. One main road loops around the island, with a second running through the Lowlands. Wherever you end up, you are never more than fifteen minutes from finding your way back. Exploring freely is part of the experience.
Which Car to Rent
Rental rates on Sint Maarten are among the lowest in the Caribbean, so there is no need to overspend. An economy car — four doors, automatic transmission, air conditioning — handles everything the island demands. The roads are built for slow to medium speeds, speed bumps are common in residential areas, and parking in Philipsburg or Grand Case is considerably easier in a compact than in a full-size SUV.
Some of the best value options are small Japanese and Korean compacts not widely known in North America but popular in Europe — agile, fuel-efficient, and easy to park on narrow island roads. The Hyundai i10 and Kia Picanto are reliable choices for two to four passengers. For four larger adults, step up to an intermediate class like the Hyundai Elantra, typically about 20% more expensive.
Editor's opinion, not universally shared: the Jeep Wrangler looks the part but is a poor choice for Sint Maarten. It is an off-road vehicle — which means every pothole, speed bump, and rough patch of road feels amplified. The island has plenty of all three. Save the Wrangler for elsewhere.
What About Scooters?
Scooters are available but offer no real price advantage over a car and introduce unnecessary safety risk. If two wheels are your preference and you are an experienced rider, Sint Maarten has Harley-Davidson rentals available. Otherwise, stick with a car.
