Plane landing at Princess Juliana International Airport

Sint Maarten Has Two International Airports

Princess Juliana International Airport is the busiest airport in the northeastern Caribbean and one of the most famous in the world — not for its size, but for what happens just before touchdown.

The Most Dramatic Landing in the Caribbean

Aircraft approaching Sint Maarten's runway 10 skim low over Maho Beach, separated from the sand by nothing more than a narrow road and a chain-link fence. Aviation enthusiasts fly to Sint Maarten specifically for this experience. First-time visitors discover it unexpectedly from their window seat. Either way, it is an unforgettable introduction to the island.

Maho Beach is the place to watch both arrivals and departures up close. The Sunset Bar & Grill and the Driftwood Boat Bar bookend the beach — cold drink in hand, camera ready, jets overhead. There is nowhere else on earth quite like it.

Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM)

Regular jet service connects Sint Maarten directly with major cities on the US East Coast — typically a two to three hour flight. Amsterdam and Paris operate direct transatlantic routes. SXM is also the regional hub for the northeastern Caribbean, with frequent commuter connections to Anguilla, St. Barths, Saba, Statia, and St. Kitts.

Despite its international reach the airport is efficient and human in scale. Clear signage, experienced staff, and a logical layout move arrivals through quickly. Duty-free shopping and dining options inside the terminal cover the essentials without the chaos of a major hub.

Step outside the terminal, feel the trade wind, and you know immediately — you have arrived somewhere special.

Grand Case Espérance Airport (SFG)

The French side of the island has its own airport on the edge of Grand Case, the island's culinary capital. Smaller in scale, it serves regular flights to Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and the French Caribbean islands of St. Barths, Guadeloupe, and Martinique. For travelers arriving from the French Antilles, Grand Case is the natural entry point.

From the Runway to the Road

Sint Maarten rewards travelers who explore independently. With a rental car you set your own pace — a spontaneous stop at Maho Beach, a sunset dinner in Grand Case, a morning on the French side followed by an afternoon on the Dutch. The island is small enough to cross in twenty minutes, large enough to keep surprising you.

For travelers based on the French side — or anyone looking to save significantly on transatlantic fares — Grand Case opens an interesting option. Connecting through Guadeloupe to Paris can cost roughly half the price of a direct transatlantic flight from Princess Juliana. It requires an extra stop, but for budget-conscious travelers or long-stay residents, the saving is worth knowing about.
