Nude Beaches on St-Maarten / St-Martin — The Honest Guide

beaches Mar 31, 2026

Sint Maarten — Saint Martin has a more relaxed attitude toward beach nudity than almost anywhere else in the Caribbean. This is not marketing language. It is a practical description of how the island actually operates. Topless sunbathing is the norm on virtually every beach. Full nudity is accepted in a number of locations without anyone raising an eyebrow. The island has been a destination for naturists for decades and has the infrastructure — charter boats, clothing-optional resorts, and secluded beaches — to support it.

Orient Beach — The Flagship

Orient Beach on the French side is the island's officially designated clothing-optional beach, and the most famous naturist beach in the Caribbean. The beach divides naturally into two sections: the northern part is clothing-optional throughout, while the southern end — historically the site of Club Orient, the dedicated naturist resort — is the traditional naturist hub.

Club Orient was severely damaged by Hurricane Irma in September 2017 and has not yet been fully rebuilt. The legendary Perch Bar, however, is open and operational. The area continues to function as the island's naturist center while reconstruction moves forward.

Cupecoy Beach — Dutch Side

Cupecoy is the Dutch side's unofficial clothing-optional beach and has been for as long as anyone can remember. The Dutch authorities have never formally designated it as such, and they have never done anything to change what happens there either. Sandstone cliffs provide a dramatic backdrop and some natural privacy. The beach draws a loyal regular crowd and is consistently one of the island's more interesting places to spend an afternoon.

Happy Bay — French Side

Happy Bay, tucked just north of Friar's Bay and accessible by a short walk through the scrub, is one of the island's genuinely secluded spots. Small, rarely crowded, with crystal-clear water and soft sand — clothing is entirely optional in practice. Nobody enforces anything and nobody expects you to.

Baie de l'Embouchure — French Side

Located on the northern coast, Baie de l'Embouchure is one of the quieter naturist spots on the island. A short hike through surrounding nature gives it a sense of seclusion that the more popular beaches lack. No commercial development, no crowds — for visitors who want a genuinely private naturist experience away from the scene, this is worth finding.

Friar's Bay — French Side

Friar's Bay is not exclusively a naturist beach, but it has a clothing-optional section that is well established and accepted. The beach has a casual, mixed atmosphere — locals and tourists, dressed and undressed — and is close enough to Marigot to make it a practical half-day option combined with lunch or shopping.

Baie Rouge — French Side

Baie Rouge in Terres Basses is a longer, more exposed beach popular with both locals and visitors. Topless sunbathing is the norm and full nudity is common at the less populated ends of the beach. The setting is dramatic — one of the more photogenic beaches on the island.

Tintamarre — The Offshore Option

The uninhabited island of Tintamarre, about 3 km offshore from the French side, is a regular destination for day charter boats. The combination of an uninhabited island, no authorities, and a predominantly naturist clientele on many of the charter boats makes it one of the most genuinely free beaches accessible from Sint Maarten. Bring everything you need — there are no facilities whatsoever.

A Note on Where Nudity Is Not Appropriate

Not every beach on the island operates by the same rules. Nudity is actively discouraged or prohibited at some beaches — Baie Longue in Terres Basses is specifically noted as one where nudity is not appropriate, despite its remote feel. Beaches directly in front of family resorts or hotels catering to conservative clientele are also not the right choice. Read the situation.

The General Rule

On the French side, nudity on any beach not in front of a family hotel is generally accepted without comment. On the Dutch side, topless sunbathing is universally accepted. Full nudity is tolerated at Cupecoy and on remote beaches. No one will approach you about it on either side.

Charter Options for Naturists

Several charter operators run day trips specifically aimed at naturist visitors, combining snorkeling stops, beach time on remote shores, and a relaxed approach to clothing throughout. Ask specifically when booking — operators know their clientele and will tell you directly.
