Getting Around by Bus on Sint Maarten
Getting Around by Bus on Sint Maarten
Sint Maarten is small enough that the entire island is reachable by public bus — and cheap enough that it makes real sense for budget-conscious visitors. Fares between towns run $2 per person or less. Getting from Philipsburg to Grand Case costs $4 total with one change in Marigot. A week of island exploration by bus costs less than a single taxi ride from the airport to a hotel on the other side of the island.
The buses do not look like public transportation from back home. They are multi-passenger vans — any brand, any age, any size. On the Dutch side, look for a license plate marked BUS and a sign in the front window showing the route's start and end points. Some drivers in the United Bus Association have their routes color-coded on the front of the vehicle.
Flagging one down
Buses stop anywhere it is safe to pull over, not just at official stops. Stand on the correct side of the road for your destination and raise your hand as the bus approaches. If it is full or the driver is off duty, it will not stop. When you board, greet the driver — "Good morning," "Good afternoon," or "Good night" depending on the time of day. This is standard courtesy anywhere on the island, not just on buses.
Do not slam the door. No eating or drinking on board.
Getting off and paying
When your destination is approaching, say "Stop for me please." Pay the driver as you exit. Carry small change — exact change is always preferred, especially in the morning before drivers have had time to accumulate it. Do not slam the door on the way out.
Routes and fares
Buses cover Philipsburg, Simpson Bay, Marigot, Grand Case, Orient Bay, French Quarter, St. Peters, and several other areas. Some destinations require a change. Philipsburg to Grand Case, for example, means Philipsburg to Marigot ($2) then Marigot to Grand Case ($2). Partial routes cost less — Simpson Bay from Mullet Bay runs $1.50 if you exit before the drawbridge.
Buses generally run from before 7am until around 8pm, though drivers set their own hours. Rates increase after midnight. Children under three ride free.
If you are new to the system, ask — drivers and regular riders are generally helpful about explaining routes and connections.
